Hello Scout Families~

We look forward to seeing everyone at our End of Year Pack Picnic tomorrow evening at Rennie Park.  We encourage Scouts to wear their uniform to school tomorrow too.  This is a great way to start recruiting for this next year and to talk to friends about Scouting!  Feel free to invite friends/neighbors to join us at any of our upcoming events! We would enjoy meeting them and talking about Scouting!

Here  is the agenda for the evening:

6:00PM        Dinner within individual Dens (Picnic)

6:45PM        Auction to begin

7:30PM        Distribution Awards/Kerchief/Brief Announcements (Come Hear About All the Fun Summer Activities on the Calendar)

8:00PM        Flag Retirement Ceremony/Adjourn

Please remember each Den/Family will make arrangements for your own meal/drinks/blankets/chairs/bug spray.  Don’t forget your Cub Bucs for the auction!!!  You will not want to miss the neat stuff that has come together….THANK YOU to those who are making this happen (especially Caroline Rudisill and Christine Barr….our Cub Buc Auction Committee)!!!

We hope you and your Scout have enjoyed the year within Pack 353 and look forward to seeing you this summer at one of our Summer Activities…REMEMBER your Scout must attend at least THREE (3) activities this summer to earn their Summer Activity Pin.  Start planning now….this will include Day Camp, our Back To School Swim Party in August, our September Picnic as well as the number of REALLY fun activities that are already in the works!  Be sure to watch the website and listen tomorrow evening to learn more about our *splash* for the summer! J

We appreciate all our dedicated parents for making Pack 353 the talk of the District!!!  It’s because of you that we are able to provide a quality program and activities that our Scouts will remember!  We hope you all enjoy a fun, safe,  and relaxing summer!

SCOUT FAIR 2010

It's time for the annual Scout Fair at Reliant Arena this weekend.  This is a great weekend of lots of fun that is free for anyone that comes through the doors.

Scout Fair is an opportunity for scouts, scout parents, and any interested party to come and see all the different things that scouts can do.  There will be an opportunity for kids to go through obstacle courses, cross scout-built bridges, build bottle rockets, build & shoot marshmellow guns, race their Pinewood Derby cars, earn belt loops & pins, plus lots of other fun stuff.  If you want to race, you'll need to register your car by this Friday at this link: http://www.megaderby.com/.

Our pack will be presenting our Disabilities Booth and we are asking that the dens provide 2 scouts (in Class A Uniforms) and 2 adults according to the following schedule:

10:45 - 12:10 Den 6 Bears

11:45 - 1:10 Dens 1 & 10 (Webelos & Tigers)

12:45 - 2:10 Dens 2 & 5 (Webelos & Wolves)

1:45 - 3:10 Den 8 Wolves

Pack 353 took our spring camping trip to Brazos Bend near Needville, TX.  This was perhaps our closest camping trip in about 4 years, and it drew over 67 campers from our pack.  We skirted weather problems throughout the weekend, but we were blessed with cloudy skies during the day (to keep the temperature down) and clear skies at night (to allow us to do some stargazing). Although there was a scare for thunderstorms early Sunday morning, they were slow moving which allowed almost all of us to pack and get home before it started to rain.

We had a great campsite with a large field for games, HUGE trees for climbing, and plenty of amenities for amusement. Our kids had the chance to go on several hikes to view the famous alligators at the park.  In addition to the 'gators, we saw an incredible amount of wildlife including birds, turtles, caterpillars, and insects to make any conservationist happy.  The skies were clear each night that allowed some amateur stargazing and instruction on how to find the major constellations as well as the ability to look through the HUMONGOUS telescopes at the George R. Brown Observatory on Saturday night.  This was a unique opportunity to not only see the equipment, but to see it in action.

As usual, the trip included fun den activities, some masterful outdoor cooking (including a meringue pie) and some experimentation with new outdoor cooking techniques like Box Ovens, Dutch Oven Desserts, and a Chili Cookoff!  As the weekend wound down, the campfire provided a great chance for our scouts to show their theatrical side with skits and jokes.

It's that time of year again, and Pack 353 needs your help to keep the pack moving forward.  By joining our team you'll be a key member of creating the fun and safe environment for our kids to continue their journey towards adulthood.  We have a variety of needs, each with a different level of skill and commitment.  Some are year-round, while others only require your help for a single event.

Not to worry, you won't be left alone, and this is not a never-ending position.  In most cases, you'll have the opportunity to "shadow" the current person for a few months so that you can learn all about it. If the position is currently vacant, then you'll get help from the rest of the leadership team.  If you have any interest or want to know more, please call or email Amy K.

Here are our needs:

Treasurer 2-4 hours per month The Treasurer is responsible for maintaining the pack's financial records, depositing dues, and issuing checks for approved expenses. Scout's rank should be a Tiger, Wolf, Bear.
Advancement Team 2-4 hours per month The Advancement Team is responsible for working with den leaders to track achievement's by the scouts and to purchase patches, loops, and pins.
Public Relations 1 hour per week Work with Webmaster (John Baldwin) to update the website with articles and pictures and maintain contacts with local newsletters and media with pack activities.  Necessary skills include writing, editing, and communications.
Summer Activities Team 1 hour per week We can use 2-3 people to plan at least 3 summer activities this summer as well as our Back to School Swim Party in August.
