Pack 353 took our spring camping trip to Brazos Bend near Needville, TX.  This was perhaps our closest camping trip in about 4 years, and it drew over 67 campers from our pack.  We skirted weather problems throughout the weekend, but we were blessed with cloudy skies during the day (to keep the temperature down) and clear skies at night (to allow us to do some stargazing). Although there was a scare for thunderstorms early Sunday morning, they were slow moving which allowed almost all of us to pack and get home before it started to rain.

We had a great campsite with a large field for games, HUGE trees for climbing, and plenty of amenities for amusement. Our kids had the chance to go on several hikes to view the famous alligators at the park.  In addition to the 'gators, we saw an incredible amount of wildlife including birds, turtles, caterpillars, and insects to make any conservationist happy.  The skies were clear each night that allowed some amateur stargazing and instruction on how to find the major constellations as well as the ability to look through the HUMONGOUS telescopes at the George R. Brown Observatory on Saturday night.  This was a unique opportunity to not only see the equipment, but to see it in action.

As usual, the trip included fun den activities, some masterful outdoor cooking (including a meringue pie) and some experimentation with new outdoor cooking techniques like Box Ovens, Dutch Oven Desserts, and a Chili Cookoff!  As the weekend wound down, the campfire provided a great chance for our scouts to show their theatrical side with skits and jokes.

It's that time of year again, and Pack 353 needs your help to keep the pack moving forward.  By joining our team you'll be a key member of creating the fun and safe environment for our kids to continue their journey towards adulthood.  We have a variety of needs, each with a different level of skill and commitment.  Some are year-round, while others only require your help for a single event.

Not to worry, you won't be left alone, and this is not a never-ending position.  In most cases, you'll have the opportunity to "shadow" the current person for a few months so that you can learn all about it. If the position is currently vacant, then you'll get help from the rest of the leadership team.  If you have any interest or want to know more, please call or email Amy K.

Here are our needs:

Position Commitment Description / Skills Needed
Committee Chair 2-3 hours per week The Committe Chair works with the cubmaster, charter organization and other leaders to create a fun program for our boys.  Key responsibilities are to coordinate monthly meetings, submit annual "charter" information to district, and to help leaders fulfill their responsibilities.  Scout's rank should be a Tiger, Wolf, or Bear.
Treasurer 2-4 hours per month The Treasurer is responsible for maintaining the pack's financial records, depositing dues, and issuing checks for approved expenses. Scout's rank should be a Tiger, Wolf, Bear.
Advancement Team 2-4 hours per month The Advancement Team is responsible for working with den leaders to track achievement's by the scouts and to purchase patches, loops, and pins.
Public Relations 1 hour per week Work with Webmaster (John Baldwin) to update the website with articles and pictures and maintain contacts with local newsletters and media with pack activities.  Necessary skills include writing, editing, and communications.
Summer Activities Team 1 hour per week We can use 2-3 people to plan at least 3 summer activities this summer as well as our Back to School Swim Party in August.
Cub Buc Team 2 hours per month Coordinate Cub Buc Auctions and distribution of cub buc's to pack leadership.
Camping Team 2-4 hours per month We need another person to work with Chris Fowler to identify and plan pack camping activities.
Special Events Team 1-2 hours per month We need 2-4 people to plan and coordinate spevial events throughout the year, including Service Projects, Raingutter Regatta, Pumpkin Contest, and December Crafts.

On March 28, the Den 10 Tigers enjoyed a beautiful Sunday afternoon hiking in George Bush Park.  They earned their Hiking belt loop by reviewing hiking safety rules, discussing hiking gear, and then going on a three mile round-trip hike (which is a far distance for Scouts with short legs!).  Now we are ready to hike Brazos Bend.

Wahoo Buckaroos!

Thank you!  Thank you!  Thank you! Thank you from your Pack 353 2010 Foodies!  Thank you from your Pack 353 Leadership Team!  Thank you from KCM!  Thank you from Texas Skies District!  Thank you from Sam Houston Area Council!  Thank you from all the families who will benefit from your efforts over the past two Saturdays!

Pack 353 did a mighty, and I mean MIGHTY, fine job “scouting” and rounding up food for the 2010 Scouting for Food/Souper Bowl of Caring today and last Saturday!  As of 1:00p.m. today, Pack 353 spread out 51 youth and 39 adults who distributed 2200 hangers and collected (are you ready?!) 1524 pounds of food!  Combined with 758 pounds collected by Troop 209, our two units delivered over 1 ton (2282 pounds) of packaged food to Katy Christian Ministries!!!  Yee-haw!  High-five!  Awesome!  Way to go!

A huge thanks to Troop 209 for providing boxes, letting us corral and tally at the Deren-Huff Scout House, and making three deliveries to get all of our food over to KCM!  Special thanks to Jim Melton, Stuart Cox, and Patton King for the delivery services!  Food wranglers at KCM were very grateful to have all Pack 353 and Troop 209 food already corralled in boxes.  There was quite a scramble unloading bags into boxes at the KCM warehouse.

And now, after getting all the Den statistics corralled, the news you’ve all been waiting for:

Tiger Den 10             7 youth  6 adults  204.6 pounds     15.7 pounds per person
Wolves Den 5 & 8         11 youth 8 adults  212.8 pounds     11.2 pounds per person
Bears Den 6 & 7          15 youth 5 adults  382 pounds       19.1 pounds per person
Webelos I Den 1 & 2      11 youth 6 adults  406.2 pounds     23.9 pounds per person
Webelos II Den 3          5 youth  5 adults  318.4 pounds     31.8 pounds per person

These results are tremendous!  There are always ways to improve.  Please email your thoughts and suggestions on 1) what went well and 2) what could be better for next year to either Jon Walters or Mike Angiolillo at your earliest convenience.
